Bacteriology

Our bacteriology department consists of several experts (PhD., MSc. and BSc.) who can perform a variety of bacteriological analyses, with the highest attention to detail and quality. Whether it is diagnostics or project-related work, our team will assist you to gain a better understanding of your specific requests. Our goal is to assist the veterinarian in making the correct diagnosis while offering complementary services; such as optimizing the composition of autogenous vaccines and thorough bacterial strain characterization and comparison. Poulpharm also acts as an external partner for pharmaceutical companies wishing to conduct bacteriological analyses. Over the years, our lab has built up expertise in translational in vitro analysis as well as in characterizing (medicinal) products in terms of their bacterial composition or antibacterial properties.

Classical culture and molecular bacteriology are powerful tools to help the veterinarian make a correct diagnosis, or to provide useful data in the context of a research hypothesis. At Poulpharm, a range of examinations or analyses can be performed upon specific request.

  • Aerobic and anaerobic culture on different sample matrices
  • Standardized or customized tests for the determination of antimicrobial resistance (AMR)
    • Agar dilution
    • Broth (micro) dilution
    • Disc diffusion/ E-test
    • Screening of indicator bacteria (E. coli)
  • Specific culture of complex microorganisms such as; but not limited to, Mycoplasma spp., O. rhinotracheale, Clostridium spp., G. anatis, P. multocida
  • Customized in vitro translational assay

In addition, Poulpharm is ISO 17025 accredited for the following analyses:

  • Quantitative determination of the total number of microorganisms using Rodac (hygienogram)
  • Detection of Salmonella spp. according to ISO 6579-1 on animal manure and environmental samples, originating from the primary production

Capacity

Our laboratory meets all the requirements for a BSL-2 laboratory and has the following capabilities for bacteriological analyses, among others:

  • Storage of samples at controlled temperature: 2-8°C, -20°C, -80°C.
  • Controlled incubation of samples at 30°C, 37°C, 40°C or higher.

In addition to general equipment, Poulpharm has access to a wide range of different instruments, media and analytical reagents to enable customized analyses.

projects

The following are some examples of Poulpharm activities as an external partner for the industry:

  • Determination of MIC for various microorganisms (aerobic, anaerobic, micro-aerophilic) against specific probiotics (non-API), antibiotics or new chemical entities
  • Epidemiological screening of broiler farms for prevalence of specific resistance genes or specific pathogens and subsequent MIC characterization of these isolates
