Streptococcus suis in Focus: Epidemiological insights from 72 WGS-characterized isolates

Streptococcus suis remains a major pathogen in swine production, characterized by significant genetic heterogeneity that complicates epidemiological interpretation and control strategies. Here we present the our main findings from the whole genome sequencing (WGS) characterization of 72 recent isolates obtained between 2021 and 2026, from 38 diagnostic cases.

Table 1: Main S. suis serotypes identified

Serotype distribution and diversity

The most frequently identified serotypes in the analyzed cases continue to be 2, 7 and 9, consistent with the current European epidemiological scenario. Notably, serotype 9 was identified in 28% of the cases, confirming its high prevalence.
